This short book, Why can’t they hear us? is available for download as a pdf below. It looks at the challenge of reaching secular people in the West. I have used the slides in various talks. Under the Articles section you can find a couple of short articles introducing the same topic.
The basic argument put forward is that Christian churches have been largely talking to themselves and other Christians. Secular society is thinking in different ways from Christians and that has made communicating Christian belief difficult. Overcoming the communication challenge requires a deeper understanding of how secular people think and see themselves and the world around them. This short book is a contribution to that process.
All use of the slides must be attributed to Duncan Bayliss and a link given to this website and the document, Why can’t they hear us?
What are the conversations secular people need before Christian belief makes sense?

Christians need to show how science is now supporting faith not undermining it

We also need to demonstrate the credibility of the Bible and revelation by God.

We need to understand how big a step it is for secular people to come to belief in Jesus

The secular Grand Narrative of what life is all about is a narrative of despair.

The Christian Grand Narrative of life is one of hope. Christians need to show that faith is not wishful thinking or a leap in the dark, but is based on good evidence and is a reasonable step to take because God really is there and Jesus is His Son and He will not turn you away if you seek him.
